Many common questions are answered within the Engineer
Licensing Guidance Document (ELGD) issued by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
- Q. I hold an IR Part 66/JAR-66 licence with restrictions, how do I remove them?
- A. Check the ELGD, Section B: Conversion of Protected Rights for general information and common conversion scenarios. AST provides information, short
modular courses and/or approved examinations to assist in this process.
- Q. Do I need to sit examinations with the CAA after taking an AST course?
- A. Not normally, AST is fully approved to examine candidates on behalf of the CAA for all full modules, and most of the conversion and extension scenarios.
- Q. How long after taking an examination with AST should I expect to wait for my results?
- A. AST normally requires 7 working days from the date of the examination to publish results.
- Q. If I pass an approved examination with AST what certification do I receive?
- A. AST will issue a Certificate of Recognition of Approved Examination to all successful candidates.
- Q. I have failed an approved examination at another centre recently can I retake the same module examination at AST on the next available exam date?
- A. It depends upon how recent the failure was the regulations state that a period of 90 days must elapse before the same examination can be attempted again. This rule applies to all centres regardless of where the failed examination was taken.
- Q. I already hold a full, unrestricted IR Part 66 licence and want to extend to add another category can AST help me in this?
- A. Yes, AST's approval includes the facility to offer the common licence extension examinations.
- Q. I am a self-improver candidate and understand that there are minimum experience requirements, what are they?
- A. The IR Part 66 regulations state the minimum experience requirements for each licence category/sub-category. The information is reproduced in the ELGD, in paragraph 3 of the section on each licence category.
- Q. I am seeking initial licence issue through the self-improver route and hold academic qualifications, are there any exemptions offered for these?
- A. The CAA may offer exemptions against certain academic qualifications, awarded by a UK College or University; refer to the ELGD, paragraph 6.3 under the category of licence you are seeking.
- Q. I am a member/ex member of HM forces do I get any exemptions?
- A. You may be granted an exemption by the CAA, but generally only against the experience requirements, unless you also hold an appropriate academic qualification. Refer to the ELGD, paragraph 4 under the category of licence you are seeking.
