FAQ - IR Part 147 Approved Basic Courses
- Q. Are there any pre-requisites to joining the approved basic course?
- A. We require that potential students should have a good level of spoken and written English, normally an IELTS score of 5.5 or greater, and a good grounding in mathematics and physics.
- Q. Do I have to sit any examination with the UKCAA after completing the course?
- A. No, all examinations and assessments are conducted by AST during the approved course.
- Q. How much practical work is included in the approved course?
- A. The regulations require a minimum of 60% practical work for Category A courses, and 40% for Category B.
- Q. Can I decide which lessons to attend?
- A. No, there are strict attendance requirements for the approved courses, if you do not meet the minimum attendance requirement you cannot graduate, even if you meet all other requirements (eg. You have passed all examinations and assessments)
- Q. I understand that a work placement must be undertaken with an appropriate maintenance organisation as a part of the approved course, do I have to arrange this for myself?
- A. No, AST will arrange and monitor the On the job Training (OJT) placement for you.
- Q. How will I be examined?
- A. Each module is examined by a multiple-choice examination paper, and certain modules also require you to complete an essay paper. Your practical competence will be tested by regular assessments.
